Repost from RDEK FaceBook page:
INFORMATION FROM THE MINISTRY OF FORESTS/ROCKY MOUNTAIN RESOURCE DISTRICT WILDFIRE RISK REDUCTION TEAM (Post: Aug 25) The Provincial Wildfire Risk Reduction (WRR) Program, in collaboration with the District of Invermere Fire Department, BC Wildfire Service, and Canadian Wildlife Service, has three prescribed burn projects planned in the Invermere area for mid-September. As the exact timing will depend on a number of factors, including weather and site conditions, we will provide more information once we have a better idea of the possible timing. These wildfire risk reduction projects are being planned in the following areas: • District Lot 4616 (west of Westside Road south of Invermere): This burn will provide a cross-training opportunity between structural and wildland fire crews from Invermere. • Toby North: This burn is being planned by the WRR team with assistance from BC Wildfire. • Wilmer North: This burn has been initiated and prescribed by Canadian Wildlife Service (CWS), with assistance from WRR and BC Wildfire, and spans CWS property and adjacent provincial land. The overall intent of the wildfire risk reduction effort is to lower fire intensities and the rate of spread to allow for a successful suppression, helping to enhance community resiliency, emergency response, and public safety. Smoke may be visible to the surrounding communities, both during and in the days following the burn operations. More details on these projects can be found at engage.rdek.bc.ca/firesmart As these are not RDEK projects, questions related to this work should be directed to Trevor Campbell - Ministry of Forests, at Trevor.Campbell@gov.bc.ca |

| Firesmart Updates |
|
Now is the perfect time to prepare your house for the upcoming fire seasons. Some things you do now include cleaning the leaves and debris from your gutters, moving wood piles at least 10 meters from structures, trim any dead branches from your trees and remove any branches from mature trees that are within 2 meters from the ground up the tree. Consider replacing any bark mulch with rock, or another non-combustible material, as bark mulch easily ignites and creates embers that become airborne rapidly spreading fire. More information on what you can do to FireSmart your property and home can be found here Begins At Home Guide
