| Friday April 10, 2026: Prescribed Burn Lot 4616 |
|
The prescribed burn in District Lot 4616 is part of ongoing wildfire risk reduction efforts in the Invermere area. It is being led by the BC Wildfire Service, in collaboration with Invermere Fire Rescue and the Ministry of Forests. This is a low‑intensity, carefully planned prescribed fire, designed to reduce hazardous fuels, support forest health, and help protect surrounding communities, infrastructure, and access routes.
Approximately 24.1 hectares are planned to be treated within a larger 49.3‑hectare allowable burn area.
Schedule (weather dependent)
Site preparation is scheduled to begin this Thursday, with burn operations planned for Friday, April 10, followed by crews returning on Saturday to address remaining areas and transition into mop‑up operations. Sunday onward will be dedicated to continued mop‑up and monitoring, with duration dependent on site conditions.
Active burning is expected to last up to 48 hours, followed by 3–5 days of mop‑up and monitoring. All activities are dependent on suitable weather, fuel moisture, and venting conditions and will only proceed if conditions are favourable.
What to Expect
During operations, smoke and visible flames may be present in the area. Smoke may linger for several days following ignition and could settle overnight, particularly during calm conditions. Traffic signage may be deployed if visibility on nearby routes is affected.
Please note that the treatment area and surrounding trails may be temporarily closed for up to 7 days to ensure public and crew safety.
Public and crew safety remains the top priority, and the burn will only proceed under carefully controlled conditions with trained personnel and appropriate equipment on site.
Health & Public Information
A temporary clean air refuge will be available in the lobby of the Columbia Valley Centre for those seeking relief from smoke during operations.
On Friday, April 10, the District of Invermere’s Communications Coordinator will be on site hosting a public information tent from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. to answer questions and provide additional information.
